So, when tickets to Florida were going to run our family of three about $2500.....we decided to drive. We rented a van and drove with another family down to Florida. Even though it wasn't the most fun, it was way cheap splitting gas the whole way! We left about 9:00am and drove through the night to arrive at the island about noon the next day (with plentiful stops of course).
On our way to Florida!
Nick's Kindle was great....we put some Dora, Bubble Guppies, and Fresh Beat Band on there and it gave us a few minutes of piece every now and then,
It was pretty late and Gabs didn't nap at all in the car. When it was time for "bed" we told her we were going to sleep in the car and have a sleep over together. Though a few tears and whimpers she said "I want go home and sleep in my crib...I no want to sleep in my car seat". So sad! But she was out in about two minutes so all was good. She woke up at 3:00am and 6:00am when we made stops, but she went right back to sleep each time and slept until about 8:30am.
Things got a little crazy by the next morning in the car.....
Gabrielle also figured out how to do self-portraits with my phone :)
Getting on the ferry to the island!!
On the island! Waiting for Gma Billie to pick us up in the golf cart
Taking a boat ride to dinner with Soosie
On the second day of our return trip Gabrielle finally took a little nap will watching Bubbles
Gabrielle LOVED the pool and learned how to jump in (to our arms) all by herself. She also did well swimming (moving her arms and legs) while we held her.
Gabrielle was in the best little mood pretty much the whole time. She loved meeting all the new people down there, and was very entertaining. She learned to say "hi, what's your name??" to everyone she saw (which she still does in MI, now). And she got very accustomed to answering "Gabrielle" and "two" when people asked what her name was and how old she was. Big girl!
She really liked all the flowers, birds, lizards ("geckos") and butterflies down there.
She liked the ocean for the first few days and then was over that. The sun tent I bought came in very handy though. There was just one day it was too windy to set it up on the beach.
She really liked the cool sand in the evening. I think she would play in it all night if we let her.
We had our own condo, but would hang out and G&Gs Taylor's condo during the day because they sprung for the place right on the beach (we were across the street). Gabrielle napped there and Nick and I were about to hang out by ourselves for a while each day.
Gabs ate shrimp cocktail (first shellfish) and loved it! She chow about five of those big, cold shrimp at a sitting!
Got her first sliver in Florida, and it was big one. Grandma Billie and Nick had to do surgery on her little foot while I held her. She did very well, and thankfully got the concept that we were going to make her foot feel better even though it hurt :/ I glad that didn't happen until the last day, though, because she was limping on that foot (dramatic!) and we were pretty careful about keeping it clean and bandaged...not easy to do on the beach.
Overall, it was a very successful trip!!
