So, names have never been easy for Nick and I to agree on and we didn't choose baby boy's name until after he was born just like we did with Gabrielle. When we found out I was pregnant again, I was dreading trying to choose a name if it was another girl since we used the only two names we could agree on - Gabrielle and Sophia. We waited until 20 weeks to even bring up the thought of names and then.....it's a BOY! Yay! This should be easy. I actually like lots of boy names. And so does Nick. Just......none of them overlap. That last part is key in choosing a name.
Nick liked names like Lincoln, Peter and Charles. I liked Vincent (Vince), Roman, and Dominic. I think the only other names we could even begin to agree on together were Reid and Harrison.....though we didn't both like any of those enough to really consider them.
Nick brought up Oliver when we were up north for my Grandpa's 90th birthday party this summer. I didn't even really consider it since we didn't use any family names for Gabrielle and I wasn't sure how my family would feel if we used my grandfather's name - would they be offended or upset? The more I thought about it though, baby boy is going to be the only one to carry on Nick's grandfather's family name, Taylor. It would be nice if he could also carry on a name from one of his great-grandfathers on my side too. He would be a special little boy.
The only other name we could agree on was Maxwell. Though I hated the sound of MaxWELL and GabriELLE together. It drove me nuts. And I liked that Oliver was a little bit more unique. I know it is growing in popularity pretty fast, but between Max, Maxwell, Maximilian, Maximus, etc I know there will definitely be fewer Olivers running around (it was the 78th most popular name in the US in 2011).
Once I was overdue and we were scheduled for a long induction (doc was estimating two days in the hospital before the baby was born) we thought we would just talk about names at the hospital while we were waiting and try and finalize something. Well, as you know, baby boy decided he was going to come on his own after all.....and didn't give much notice! On the way to the hospital between contractions I told Nick "I think I like Oliver Maxwell". A few hours later he was born. We thought he looked like an Oliver with that chubby round face and blonde hair :) The next day we decided that that would be his name and told the grandparents when they came to meet him. My mom and dad didn't believe us at first (which was weird!) but my mom was pretty excited.
As far as nicknames.....NO Ollie!!! Nick calls him Mr. Ver, OT, and Ham. Gabs calls him Oliver Max. And I call him all of the above as well as Beefcake. And Oliver, of course.
So that's the story. Not uber interesting (is it ever, though??) but that's how Oliver Maxwell came to be!
