Baby Oliver got diagnosed with RSV....poor baby. He had a random cough for a couple of days, but I tried not to think too much of it. Well, the third day (friday) he still had it and added in some wheezing. I decided to call his doctor since it was Friday and I didn't want to risk ending up in Urgent Care over the weekend. Of course, they thought he should come in. By the time we got to his appointment he was really raspy and wheezing with the breathing along with the cough. The nurse tested for RSV and it was positive. Yay. We got a nebulizer to give him breathing treatments 4x/day, but the pedi said it might not help much, but it was all they could do and it was worth a shot.
He has been in pretty good spirits, surprisingly, but really wants to be held. So for the first time ever, our baby slept in bed with us for a couple of nights (don't tell Gabs!). He wheezes and crackles all the time when he breathes and has a hard time eating because of that. The neb does seem to help though, because his nasty wheeze turns into a light crackle after the treatment. Sunday morning was the worst....we were both wondering if we needed to go to the ER. Every exhalation he had was a loud forceful wheeze. Nick was downstairs and could hear him breathing upstairs. Not good. Luckily he woke up from his nap in the afternoon and had markedly improved. The doc warned us that the RSV would probably "peak" over the weekend but it was still pretty scary.
We went back to his pediatrician yesterday for a recheck and his is still getting over it but definitely on the right path. His respiratory rate is still too high (in the 50's, they want in the 40's at the most) and he's still wheezing and coughing. They said to increase his neb to every four hours instead of 3-4 times a day and will recheck him at his 4 month visit in about a week.
I'm quite confused as to why he is having issues with RSV....it seems that usually the babies that have a hard time with it are preemies, formula fed, small, and/or have other health problems. None of which apply to Oliver. And he's up to 15lbs at 3.5 months, though. The same size as his 8 month old cousin, Isaiah.
